By Eglantine Ponse

Introduced by Trevor White,  the director of The Little Museum of Dublin, the official opening took place on Friday the 21st of June. This new exhibition aims to tell the story of the Irish immigration to the United States. It also highlights the cultural Irish heritage in America, from St Patrick’s Day to Hollywood star, Maureen O’Hara.

Many people came to the opening to discover or rediscover the events that make up Irish-American history. Particularly active members attended as Brendan Landers and Dara Neary, former publishers of

Ireland’s Eye

, an Irish magazine in the U.S.

Our special guest, Thomas Putnam, director of the

JFK Library

and Museum of Boston, gave a speech from the same lectern used by JFK 50 years ago at the Oirechtas.  Just as the young U.S president did, Mr Putnam quoted James Joyce who described “

the Atlantic as a bowl of bitter tears”

.
