Last week saw iconic rockers U2 mark their 50th anniversary. Who could have guessed that a Dublin teenager’s message on a school noticeboard would begin a musical journey that went on to reach audiences around the world?
We were delighted to host two launches to mark the anniversary. On Monday, September 21st, Róisín Ingle launched her brilliant new Irish Times podcast ‘Drummer Seeks Musicians: The Making of U2’, which uncovers the making of U2 through new interviews with classmates, teachers, friends, family and members of the band. Give it a listen!
On Friday, September 25th, the Central Bank of Ireland launched a coin in U2’s honour. Attendees included U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr, former U2 manager Paul McGuinness, artist Guggi and broadcaster Dave Fanning.
To close out the weekend, over 1,000 U2 fans visited U2: Made in Dublin, our fan-curated exhibition featuring musical rarities, signed albums and delights such as a Trabant car, a life-size sculpture of MacPhisto and a pack of U2 condoms!
With U2 set to release their new album, Carnaval de Luz, in November, we are proud to celebrate four northside lads who showed us how to follow our passions, stay the course, and dream big. Our exhibition, created by U2 fans alongside leading photographers and artists, with the assistance of Professor Scott Calhoun and Tom Dunne, tells the story of U2 in their hometown for the first time.
Access to U2: Made in Dublin is included with any admission ticket to the museum.
