A Little History of the Dublin Pub

A Little History of the Dublin Pub

JUNE 1ST – SEPTEMBER 24TH

A LITTLE HISTORY OF THE DUBLIN PUB. CELEBRATED THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LICENSED VINTNERS ASSOCIATION – AND TOLD THE REMARKABLE STORY OF DUBLIN’S PUBLIC HOUSES– THE SHOW OPENED ON JUNE 1ST AND RUNS UNTIL SEPTEMBER 24TH IN THE IRELAND FUNDS GALLERY.

The Dublin Pub is one of the most iconic elements of Irish culture. Throughout its long history, the public house has been a place of celebration and commiseration, where the magical, the miserable and the mundane rub shoulders. From its origins in the front rooms and parlours of Dublin homes to the pinnacle of the art form in the Victorian era, the pub has always been a strange mixture of tradition and innovation, of public and private life. More than the public house, it has been the public home.

Presented in association with the Licensed Vintners Association and Guinness, visitors got a unique opportunity to see rare artefacts and photographs from some of Dublin’s finest pubs, and to take in the atmosphere of the Little Museum’s very own snug, built just for the exhibition.

“The history of Dublin’s pubs is full of fascinating stories,” said Simon O’Connor, Curator of The Little Museum of Dublin. “With its impact on pop culture, politics and everything in between, and the evolution of pubs themselves from front rooms to finely crafted works of art, there is something for everyone to take away from this one-of-a-kind exhibition.”
