Born in Dublin: 200 Years of The Coombe Hospital

We are delighted to launch our new exhibition, Born in Dublin: 200 Years of The Coombe Hospital.

The exhibition tells the story of one of the world’s oldest maternity hospitals and the generations of women, babies and healthcare professionals who have shaped its remarkable history. You can see many archival treasures, including the original 1867 Royal Charter, previously unseen photographs and historic medical equipment.

From home births to hospitals, maternity care has undergone radical transformation in the last 200 years, from ancient medical theories to modern advances in obstetrics, midwifery and neonatal medicine.

“When I walk through those old corridors, I often think about the people who’ve walked there in all sorts of mental states before, and when I look in the old delivery theatres, I often think of the people who came into the world there – and how many are famous today.”

– William Farrell, Coombe hospital porter (1967)

Alongside these changes, we remember the touching, funny and – sometimes – heartbreaking stories that reveal the astonishing range of experiences that new life brings.

Entry to Born in Dublin: 200 Years of The Coombe Hospital is included in your Famous Guided Tour ticket.
