Plan your visit to the museum

What are the opening hours? We open seven days a week from 9.30am until 5pm. On Thursdays we stay open until 8pm.

What are the Christmas opening hours? We close on Dec 24th at 5pm and re-open on Dec 28th at 9.30am. So please come and visit us over the holidays.
The museum also closes for 2 weeks at the start of every year as we prepare for the year ahead. We will close on Jan 8th and re-open to the public on Sat 21st Jan at 9.30am.

Where is the museum? 15 St Stephen's Green, on the north side of the Green, near the corner of Dawson Street. We are a two minute walk from the top of Grafton Street. 


How much does it cost? Admission is €8. Senior citizens and students pay €6. The museum is small and our tours are often full. To avoid disappointment, buy your tickets now by clicking here

Is the museum suitable for children? Absolutely! Children love the museum. We have worksheets for kids of all ages and there are lots of fun things to do throughout the building.

Do I have to take a guided tour? Yes, admission to the museum is by guided tour. Our famous guided tours start on the hour, every hour. The tour is included in the price of your ticket. 

What if I don't want to take a guided tour? Become a member of the museum. Members are entitled to wander around the museum without going on a guided tour. To join, just click here

Is the museum wheelchair accessible? Not really. The museum is on the first floor of an old Georgian building. While assistance is available for visitors with wheelchairs, we hope to create universal access shortly. 

Are there discounts for groups? Yes.

Is there parking? No. But there is on-street parking on St Stephen's Green and a public car park in the Fitzwilliam Hotel on the west side of the Green.

Is there a place to eat in the museum? Yes. All our visitors enjoy a 10% discount in Hatch & Sons, the acclaimed Irish restaurant in the basement of the museum. 

Can I see a temporary exhibition without going on a guided tour? Yes, if you're a Member of the museum. Members enjoy unlimited admission all year round. To become a member, click here. 

How little is the museum? It’s not so little anymore.  We have three exhibition spaces over three floors, with over 5,000 items on display.  Come and see what the fuss is about today!

Can I hold a private event at the museum? Yes, the museum makes a perfect venue for events of all sizes.  Please call Sarah Costigan on 661 1000 to discuss your requirements.

Is there a place to leave my bag when I visit the museum? Yes, we have a cloakroom. You can leave coats, bags, umbrellas and buggies – at your own risk.  

I want to donate something to the museum. What should I do? Please send a photograph of the item to bureau [at]  Please do not bring it into the museum unless we ask you to do so.
