Martha Kearns introduces the project to readers of the Sunday Business Post:

The promoters of a new museum for Dublin city are calling on members of the public to donate or lend items to the museum, which is to open this summer.

The Little Museum of Dublin is to be located at 15 St Stephen’s Green and is the brainchild of Trevor White, the founding publisher of the Dubliner magazine.

It is hoped that the public will provide items to help ‘‘tell the story of Dublin in the 20th century’’.

The museum will also serve as the headquarters for City of a Thousand Welcomes, a new project set up to boost tourism and civic pride.

Dublin City Council, Dublin Regional Authority and Fáilte Ireland are among the patrons of the project and the museum will be run by a new non-profit company that is seeking charitable status.

Furniture, paintings, photographs, letters and first-hand accounts of key moments of the 20th century are all required and can be pledged to the museum at www.littlemuseum.ie.

‘‘In addition ,we need a working jukebox,” said White, who is director of the museum. ‘‘We’d love the Proclamation of Independence, Bono’s first love letter and TK Whitaker’s phone number. Frankly we’ll look at anything to do with Dublin in the 20th century.”

The promoters plan to have regular events in the museum, as well as an outreach programme. The City of a Thousand Welcomes initiative will be launched on Bloomsday and aims to ‘‘promote Dublin as a place where tourists are made to feel at home’’.

‘‘Our goal was to recruit 1,000 volunteer ambassadors [for the initiative] within three months. Two weeks after the appeal we had over 2,000 applications,” said White.

June 16, 2011: Today Dublin becomes the only city in the world where the locals literally queue up to welcome visitors. A new project called City of a Thousand Welcomes harnesses the Irish capital’s reputation for offering a warm welcome with a format that makes sharing a pint or a cuppa with a Dubliner a certainty rather than a hope for thousands of visitors.

“Over three million people visit Dublin each year,” says Trevor White, director of the project, “and the reason why many of them come here is to meet friendly locals. City of a Thousand Welcomes brings visitors and Dubliners together in a fun, structured, safe way, at no cost to either party.”

From today, people from all over the world can sign up at www.cityofathousandwelcomes.com to meet with our Dublin Ambassadors over a free drink or cup of tea in three great Dublin institutions: the Merrion Hotel, Bewley’s Café and the Porterhouse.

When the call for Ambassadors was issued in March, the organisers wanted to recruit 1,000 volunteers to sign up as Ambassadors. Over 2,500 people have since applied, proving that Dublin really is one of the friendliest cities in the world. Among the volunteers are well-known Dubliners such as Victoria Smurfit, David McWilliams, Bill Cullen, Graham Knuttel, former Miss World Rosanna Davison and Presidential candidate Senator David Norris.

The sponsors of the service include Fáilte Ireland, Dublin City Council and Dublin Regional Authority. City of a Thousand Welcomes will be headquartered in the Little Museum of Dublin, a new people’s museum that will open on St Stephen’s Green later this summer.
