Little Museum Conservation Policy

Given the size of the Little Museum, the majority of the museum’s objects are framed paper items. The museum has a particular emphasis on conservation in this regard.

The exhibition space is across one floor, consisting of two rooms, approximately 1000 sq. ft in total. The front room is south facing, and brightly painted, and as such requires special attention with regard control of UV light. The back room is painted darkly and is north facing.

Conservation is carried out in the form of cleaning, labeling, packing and storage of artefacts, as well as the employment of environmental measuring, individual object preservation, remedial conservation and disaster policy, outlined below.

Environment The museum environment (humidity, temperature) is regularly measured and recorded. All windows in both front and back rooms are UV protected

Object Protection Standard reversible conservation framing and methods are used in all instances of the Little Museum framing objects under its ownership. Where objects are provided pre-framed from donors, the Museum will endeavour (capital allowing) to re-frame said items as far as is possible in accordance with best professional conservation practices and advice. Notification will be given to the lender of a schedule for this activity if applicable. The Museum may exercise a policy of non-acceptance for items that are not conserved using best practice methods. The Museum will endeavour to document the preservation process of every item. The Museum will endeavour to control, when possible, any of the following factors which are shown to affect the welfare of any object: temperature, relative humidity, ultraviolet light, visible light, pests, handling. The Museum should not expose any of its items to extremes of relative humidity or fluctuations in relative humidity. The Museum will not expose its collections to sustained high levels of ultraviolet light.

Remedial Conservation The Museum will endeavour to carry out remedial conservation on objects or items as a function of exhibition needs, staff and capital resources. Remedial conservation will not be carried out on objects where ownership does not rest with the Museum, except in exceptional circumstances.

Disaster Plan The Museum will endeavour to provide disaster response documentation in the form of an emergency procedures handbook to be held in relevant areas. The Museum will endeavour to provide appropriate training in disaster protection and provide suitable equipment and materials in disaster kits. The Museum will identify external bodies whose services may be used in specific emergency situations
